Dementia changes lives—not just for those diagnosed, but for their carers too. We know this firsthand.
When my grandmother's condition worsened, my grandfather cared for her as long as he could. It was overwhelming, and since my father and I lived abroad, we weren't always there to help. After university, I moved to Serbia to care for her myself. I had no experience, no guidance, and no idea what would truly help.
We hired in-home carers, but one by one, they left—it was simply too difficult. Eventually, my grandmother moved into a care home, where she passed away after four months.
The hardest part wasn't just her illness—it was watching my grandfather struggle with loneliness and grief. But over time, he found healing by reconnecting with family. Being surrounded by loved ones made all the difference.
That experience shaped us. My father and I wanted to make dementia care easier for others—so carers feel more prepared, supported, and connected.
